Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave National Park preserves the cave system and a part of the Green River valley and hilly country of south central Kentucky. This is the world's longest known cave systems, with more than 400 miles explored. Early guide Stephen Bishop called the cave a "grand, gloomy and peculiar place," but its vast chambers and complex labyrinths have earned its name – Mammoth

We found this cave on one of our previous road trips. We stopped here to eat lunch and decided to walk around. We fell in love with this park at first sight. They have numerous camp sites, picnic tables, trails to hike, and caves to explore. After we ate lunch we stopped at the information booth and spoke to a few park rangers. When we stop at a new place like this we collect all the information possible. With this information we determine if we want to turn it into its own vacation or if it’s worth stopping in the future. Although we haven’t taken a Mammoth Cave vacation we still stop here for breaks from driving. Every time we stop we take a different cave tour and explore another area of the park. We hope to vacation here soon. Not only does the park boast a magnificent cave, the trails, green river, hot springs, biking, horseback riding, boating, and fishing are all calling to our family!

The first cave tour we did was the self-guided tour. This was the only tour that was available when we got there. We walked down a steep embankment to the entrance of the cave. Once inside you were able to walk through parts of the cave on your own.

The second tour we took was The Frozen Niagara Tour. We took this tour because it gives you the perfect taste of Mammoth Cave and is really easy to navigate with small children, elderly family members, or others who cannot walk long distances. To reach this section of cave, this tour includes a 15 minute bus ride to and from the Frozen Niagara entrance.

The Visitor Center has park rangers available to answer any of your questions.  There is also a walk through museum, free, about the cave system and National Park.  Nearby is The Lodge at Mammoth Cave, it is across a footbridge from the visitor center.  You can find another gift shop there along with the Green River Grill or pop by Spelunkers CafĂ© & Ice Cream Parlor for lunch and/or ice cream!
